Power steering fluid is the liquid that allows hydraulic power steering to function. Stored in the power steering pump reservoir, the fluid is transferred to a steering gear assembly when a car's engine is running, allowing for significantly easier steering.
If your power steering fluid is low;
You'll soon notice as turning the front wheels will be much more difficult and very jerky.
The car will probably also make a lot of unhealthy noises while you’re steering.
It's strongly recommended to rectify this problem as soon as it is detected, as it can lead to long-term damage to the entire steering system.
Often caused by overheating, contaminants or leaks, your vehicle's power steering fluid can drain or deteriorate over time, so it's well worth checking it regularly. Thankfully, it's relatively painless to do so.
How To
Firstly, you need to ensure that your car is parked and the engine is cool. Locate your car's power steering fluid reservoir in the engine compartment (usually with a black or grey plastic cap).
There should be a dipstick with two graduations – wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel, then replace it fully and remove it again.
Look at the dipstick; if the fluid is below the first graduation, it needs topping up.
Add the appropriate amount, then check again to make sure that there is now enough. You should not top it up any higher than the level of the second graduation.
